Dr. Cotterell practices orthodontics exclusively. We do only braces and allow
your family's general dentist to provide your ongoing dental care such as
check-ups, cleanings, restorative work, etc.
What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a specialist who has
attended an advanced graduate program at an accredited university requiring two
or more years of full-time study exclusively in orthodontics following dental
school.
All orthodontists are dentists, but only about 6% of dentists are
orthodontists. Other dentists can legally offer braces to their patients but
lack the advanced specialized training in the diagnosis, prevention, and
treatment of dental and facial irregularities that provides the skills necessary
to properly manage facial development and tooth movement.
The American Association of Orthodontists website has more information about this specialty.
